I've been speaking with a lot of people lately about how bored they are by water and the crazy things they do to avoid it. In a few days I'll be posting information on WHY water is so important for the body and why you absolutely do need a ton of it eat each day. But before I begin to shame you into drinking more, I thought I'd give you some tools to make it more exciting if you truly can't stomach just plain water.
Go to town of unflavored, carbonated water. (Unflavored!) We get big bottles from Costco. I think we get (9) 30oz bottles for just $6, and we live in the 1 of the 2 most expensive counties in the country, so I'm certain it'll be even less expensive elsewhere. To that you can add just about anything natural. We love to get big bags of mixed frozen fruit (also from Costco), toss about 1/2 cup of that into a glass and pour the carbonated water right over the top. As it sits, the fruits lightly flavor the water and sometimes if I accidentally pour some gin in there too, I have a delicious, low calorie drink ;) (Shh, don't tell my husband).
The same can be done with plain water in terms of the fruit. I like the frozen fruit best because it's a mix of things and it keeps the water a little chilled but you have endless options. Here are some things to try out: (just note, all fresh fruit should be washed first!)
-Lemon and lime slices
-Cut up apple slices with a cinnamon stick
-Raspberries (mush these up a bit or they won't flavor the water)
-Cut up strawberries
-Strawberries and a few mint leaves (I tried this once with mint extract. Wrong, wrong, horribly wrong decision) -Orange slices
-Sliced cucumber (one of my favorites)
-Sliced ginger and lemon (this is spicy, but GREAT for the immune system. Use only a thumbnail sized piece of ginger for a minimum of 32oz of water)
-A (small) splash of cranberry juice (Juice, not cocktail!)
Like your water nice and cold? Fill an ice cube tray with any of the above, cover with water and when it's frozen, use the ice cubes to flavor the water. Plus, you'll be the fanciest person on your block.
The possibilities are truly endless. If you find something that you don't like, the good news is it's pretty inexpensive to toss the whole thing and start again. I do NOT recommend anything marketed specifically for mixing in water. Things like Mio and Crystal Light (is that even still around) are full of sugar and artificial nonsense. It is absolutely not worth it. It takes just one minute more to do it yourself, and the extra time to do the "right" thing will have such benefits for your body.
