I've been meaning to write this post for quite a while but really struggled to bring myself to sit down and do it.
I think that there's a pretty nasty stigma around depression and anxiety. People don't talk about it much. It can make people feel uncomfortable or that they need to judge others that say they have any sort of mental struggle. Unfortunately, I believe that leads to people seeking medical help from doctors without exploring other options.
I am not anti-doctor or anti-medication. I personally believe that there is a natural remedy for most things and if there's an option to treat something naturally, I believe that it's important to explore those options first. Please know that this is my personal belief and I'm not passing any judgement on you if you feel differently.
With that being said, it took me a significant amount of research and personal experimentation to get to where I am. I have finally found the perfect mix of things for me to manage my depression and anxiety and I'd like to be as public as possible with it in the hopes that it can maybe help you too.
So! Here goes! It's actually pretty simple. It's 4 important things that I do every single day, without fail.
Turmeric. Evening primrose oil. Shakeology. And Meditation.
Turmeric. Every day I have about a teaspoon of turmeric in some form or another. Honestly, most of the time I just mix the powder version of it with a bit of water and take it like a shot. I'm not a huge fan of the flavor, so the faster I can get it down the better.
My first choice would be juiced turmeric, but I can't seem to find it in stores anywhere around here.
Another option is golden milk. Here's my go-to recipe and a little more info on why golden milk is good.
Finally, you can consume it through a turmeric pill (I'd suggest this as a last option.)
Evening Primrose Oil is helpful in regulating hormones in women. Please, please be very picky about
your supplements, this one included. This is not an industry that is regulated, so often times a company can claim they're selling you a vitamin, when it truly isn't that vitamin at all. Deva is a company I trust and recommend, but it's just about the only one. If you find a "cheap" option, it's almost certainly not what it claims to be.
Shakeology. This is important to me for a number of reasons. In just about every person's diet, there are nutritional gaps. We live in a time where we're lucky enough to have all sorts of food readily available for us all year long, so we tend to stick with just food that we love and don't deviate from that much. The problem that leads to is that we're not getting a wide enough variety of nutrients, and a make up the difference with my daily Shakeology.
It's also loaded these amazing super foods that
actually encourage the body to get rid of toxins. Not only has it been helpful in my nutrition and with regulating my depression, finally getting all of the nutrients my body requires every day helps me sleep like a rock! I've always been a very light sleeper, but when I consistency have my Shakeo, I sleep deeply and through the night, every single night.
(If you want to know more about this, kindly reach out to me and we'll talk about how it may help. If you're already intrigued, you can get it here: www.shakeology.com/arielzachow )
Meditation. This one has been a sort of surprise piece of the puzzle. Every day I spend 15 minutes meditating with the Headspace app. It truly has done wonders for me. You spend 30 days working on the foundation of meditation, then have the option to do any of the various "packs" they offer. I'm currently working my way through the 30 day "depression pack". Every 10 days they touch on a new technique about how to deal with negative or anxious thoughts and feelings. (I regularly get a "free month for a friend" as part of their referral program. If you'd like to give it a try, shoot me a message and I'll send my next free month to you.) Aside from the help it provides in terms of anxiety and depression, the other benefits of long term meditation are truly fascinating. You can read more on that here.
Like I said, this has taken excessive personal experimenting. I have tried each of these things on their own, any combination of just 2 or 3 of them together and I find that I only consistently feel "good" when I have the four together each and every day, no exceptions. And I could not be happier. It was worth the time and effort and non-stop experimenting to get to this place. I am now nourishing my body, I suffer no ill side effects and I know that even if the depression were not a problem for me at all, the things I'm doing are so, so good for my body, my mind, and my soul.
I do hope that this is helpful for you. If you have any questions about any of my "ingredients", how I manage, how I dealt before these things, or even just want a friend on your journey to find your perfect mesh of things, please do not ever hesitate to reach out to me.
I really have devoted my life to helping every single person I can find their healthiest, happiest selves, and I want to help you too.
